A House Full of Books

Ours is truly a house full of books. Our 10 large bookshelves are filled to capacity and are bursting at the seams. These bookshelves reflect the interests that Damon and I share (philosophy, literature, intellectual history), which account for the bulk of the collection, and the few we don’t (his politics and my appallingly large collection of self-help books). It is an oft-heard maxim that you will “grow readers” if, among other things, you surround your children with books. Done! One of our 10 bookshelves is filled with children’s books in all genres, and we read daily with the kids like we’re supposed to. Have we done our job? You be the judge —

Today, Lily (4) was getting into the car with everyone else and said she had to go back into the house for a book. Fair enough. What she came out with was all five volumes of Thomas Aquinas’s Summa Contra Gentiles. A clear parenting victory, I’d say.

Oh, I love this story. I know what it is like to have a child who needs a book at all times…a sort of security blanket…even when he is ten years old! Peace, Nicki
